Mourning: the late András Fejes, the first Hungarian Paralympic medalist

András Fejes, Hungary’s first Paralympic medalist, clinical psychologist and a key figure in the Hungarian Paralympic movement, died at the age of 74.

According to the Wednesday obituary of the Hungarian Paralympic Committee (MPB), András Fejes was twice world champion and five times European in table tennis, earning his first Hungarian Paralympic medal as an athlete in Heidelberg in 1972: he finished third in the wheelchair. 60 meters.

Fejes was forced to sit in a wheelchair at the age of 17 due to an accident. During his rehabilitation in Austria, he became familiar with the sport of the disabled, so he began to compete. Thanks to his results, in 1970 he was already considered one of the best athletes in the world.

He participated in the establishment of the Halassy Olivér Sport Club for the disabled, which for a long time was the only association where people with disabilities could play sports in an organized way.

In addition to active sports, he graduated from the Department of Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University with summa cum laude, and in 1978 obtained the title of candidate. His professional activity was mainly aimed at mapping and reducing the complex psychological difficulties of people with physical injuries and the problem of social integration. Eight books and more than 200 papers and documents on these topics have been published in Hungarian, German, Russian, English, Romanian and Danish.

In addition to his publications, he also participated in sports diplomacy, and for ten years was a member of the board of directors of the United Nations International Disability Association (FIMITIC).

He received several awards for his achievements in sports, his scientific and public work, he was awarded several times by his hometown of Gyöngyös, and the András Fejes Sports and Event Hall received his name. In 2001 he received the Ferenc Csík Prize, in 2002 he received the Paralympic Merit Medal, in 2018 he received one of the highest state awards, the Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit.

The Hungarian Paralympic Committee considers András Fejes to be its own dead.
