After an armed attack, 54 students disappeared from Kankara Residential College in Katsina, northern Nigeria, local television Arise reported.
“There were 884 students at the school and repeated inspections revealed that 54 had disappeared without a trace,” said one of the school’s staff.
Motorcycle attackers stormed the school grounds Friday night and opened fire when the students were already asleep. Only boys study at boarding school.
The attack took place 48 hours after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari visited his hometown, Daura, also in Katsina state.
Police said Saturday they managed to force some gunmen to retreat in a shooting, and the students were able to scale the school’s fence and escape to safety, with most of the 200 missing students returning later.
Gambo Isah, a spokesman for the security forces, said that the Nigerian police, army and air force had launched a large-scale rescue operation to free the children. “The police forces followed the perpetrators, they managed to recover 200 students,” he said.
Aminu Bello Masari, governor of Katsina, visited the university on Saturday. He said the government was doing everything it could to free the students and ordered the temporary closure of boarding schools in the state with immediate effect.
According to the first results of the investigation, they are allegedly kidnappers who want to extort a ransom, but the Islamist terrorist organization Boko Haram has already committed similar atrocities. (BBC, MTI)
