One of the events of the quiet New Year’s Eve in Vienna caused serious political overtones.
Die Presse reported that street pickers clashed with police in the Favoriten district, throwing firecrackers in front of the latter. And a Christmas tree was set on fire, with nine arrests made during the police action. Among those produced are Syrian, Iraqi and Austrian citizens. While the police were being attacked, the Austrian news agency APA said that “Allah Akbar” was also shouted. The windows of several stores were broken into, newsstands, banks were damaged, chewing gums and ATMs were destroyed with firecrackers and explosives. They also allegedly tried to break into a jewelry store.
Karl Nehammer, Austria’s interior minister condemned the Vienna riots on New Year’s Eve, New Years Eve. “Parallel societies have no place in Hungary,” he said. “Anyone who cannot identify with our social values and tries to confuse them must face all the legal consequences,” he added.
Die Presse notes that it was in this neighborhood, Favoriten, that a riot took place between Kurdish and Turkish nationalist protesters in August. The Ostruk Freedom Party is already demanding deportation in connection with the case.
However, according to a report from the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, the New Year in Vienna was quiet this year. In public areas, according to the information, citizens generally complied with epidemiological regulations.
