Capitol Police said the suspect was shot after he got out of his car after the collision and pulled out a knife. The attacker was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

One of the policemen also lost his life. Capitol Police said his deceased colleague was named William Evans, who had been a staff member for 18 years. The other policeman was taken to the hospital by emergency medical personnel.

According to the US press, the attacker’s name was Noah Green. He sympathized with an extremist organization called the Islamic Nation, which attracted mainly African Americans. The 25-year-old, who likely lived in Virginia, described himself as a “Farrakhan follower” on his Facebook page. Louis Farrakhan is the leader of the Islamic Nation, which reorganized the movement starting in 1978, returning to the old racist approach.

The Capitol was locked after the shooting and staff were prohibited from leaving the building, but the lock was lifted a few hours after the event. Yogananda Pittman, the acting chief of the Capitol Police, said the suspect struck two officers on the north side of the Capitol and then collided with one of the concrete blockages. The driver got out of the car with a knife in his hand and did not respond to calls from the police. They shot him when he left for the police.

This is an extremely difficult time in the life of the Capitol Police. I ask everyone to pray for us and the family.

Pittman said.

This does not appear to be an act of terrorism.

Robert Contee, Acting Chief of the Metropolitan Police, spoke at this press conference. He added that an investigation is still ongoing and that it will be investigated whether the driver who was shot had anything to do with a terrorist organization. Contee also said that, according to the first information, the author had not previously been brought to the attention of the police.

National Guard soldiers at the scene immediately came to the aid of the police, commanding so-called rapid response forces near the Capitol. According to press reports, none of them had problems. In Washington DC, approximately 2,300 National Guard soldiers continue to support the authorities.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, ordered that the Capitol flag be lowered to half mast after the incident. United States President Joe Biden is absent from the White House near the Legislature building while spending Easter break at the presidential residence in Camp David, Maryland. In a statement, the president wrote that he and his wife, Jill Biden, had also listened with pain to what happened.

We extend our condolences to the family of Police Officer Evans. We know how difficult this was for Capitol staff and defenders as well.

said Biden, who ordered the White House flags to be lowered to half mast.

The closures around the US Legislature building have been lifted steadily in recent months. Concrete curbs and barricades were placed after January 6 around the Capitol. Then, following a rally by outgoing US President Donald Trump, his supporters stormed the Legislature Building, where the Senate was about to validate the result of the November presidential election. Five people were killed in the attack, including a police officer.
