So far, there is no solution to the problems related to EU funds, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in the federal parliament (Bundestag) on Wednesday.
The German prime minister, who holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, spoke on the topics scheduled for the EU summit starting Thursday.
He said it was already clear from the “difficult negotiations” at the July summit on the seven-year framework budget and the coronavirus epidemic recovery fund that not only the establishment of amounts but also a mechanism to link their use to the rule of law was a “problem”.
Hungary and Poland have indicated that they cannot accept the package in its current form. Therefore, “we are looking for solutions on how to lift this blockade and, of course, maintain the mechanism of the rule of law,” Angela Merkel said. “Unfortunately, I can’t say yet if that will work,” he added.
