Despite the strict measures, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus in Slovenia is not decreasing, the cabinet said in a statement on Wednesday. There is no consensus among members of the government on whether the restrictions should be stricter or if the existing ones are sufficient.

Health Minister Tomaz Gantar urges further toughening. It considered that none of the existing restrictions should be relaxed, and All non-vital activities, including public transportation, must be stopped for at least two weeks.

However, according to Economy Minister Zdravko Pocivalsek, the crisis is affecting not only healthcare but also the economy. Therefore, compromises are needed when introducing new measures, he said.

The government reviews the measures weekly and decides, in light of epidemiological data, whether to relax or extend the restrictions.

In Slovenia, groups of more than six people are currently prohibited, and, with some exceptions, nonessential shops, restaurants and hotels, as well as hair and beauty salons, may not open. There is a night curfew and a day curfew, and educational institutions have switched to distance education.

The Slovenian government has adopted another stimulus package of 1 billion euros (355.4 billion HUF) to alleviate the economic difficulties caused by the coronavirus epidemic. The bill has not yet been approved by parliament.

The package expands the measures in force so far and introduces new ones similar to the spring. Some of them will remain in force until the middle of next year, but even until the end of 2021.

It is one of the key measures of the Cabinet greater support for part-time work, the extension of the credit moratorium and the postponement of the tax liability of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The state will also bear part of its costs from companies whose turnover falls by at least 40 percent due to the epidemic.

In Slovenia, the number of infected people has risen from 2,217 to 48,934 in the past 24 hours, according to data released by the cabinet on Wednesday. A record 40 patients died, bringing the death toll to 645. Of the diagnosed patients, 1,171 are hospitalized, of which 193 are treated in the intensive care unit.

In neighboring Croatia, 2,597 new infections have been identified last day, according to a crisis team report., the number of people infected since the beginning of the epidemic amounts to 72,840. Another 28 people died from the disease last day, bringing the death toll from the epidemic to 893 so far. The hospital cares for 1,545 patients, 178 of whom are connected to ventilators.

The response to the coronavirus epidemic in Croatia is one of the most liberal in the European Union. It is mandatory to wear the mask everywhere, but with the exception of legal entities, offenders are not punished. The measures are mainly limited to the number of participants in the events, sporting events can only be held without spectators, and restaurants must close before midnight. (MTI)
