Demonstrators protested in various areas of the Autonomous Community of Madrid on Sunday against the restrictions that would take effect at midnight on Sunday, ordered by the region’s leadership to curb the spread of the coronavirus infection, writes the MTI.

Hundreds of people marched to the streets in various locations throughout the day, demanding banners Isabel Diaz Ayuso resignation of the provincial president.

The protesters wearing the mask were mobilized by civil society organizations and district associations to declare that the imposed measures were ineffective, but discriminatory and unfair.

Starting Monday, the free movement of people will be restricted in seven settlements in the region, as well as in six districts of the capital, who will only be able to leave the district or settlement of their residence in certain cases. Participants must also have a valid reason. Some examples are work, health care, care for the elderly or needy, education, formal administration.

The protesters emphasized that the measures affect the most densely populated and poorer working-class neighborhoods. They also drew attention to the contradiction that people who live here have to lock themselves in their homes after working as a street sweeper, nurse or waitress at the other end of the city, from where they came home traveling on the crowded subway.

The protesters say these areas were abandoned by the provincial leadership decades ago, so they are demanding increased defense resources rather than restrictions; strengthen basic health care, public transport to avoid overcrowding, and carry out contact investigations on infected people with more staff.

In a province with a population of 6.6 million, the restrictions affect more than 850,000 people. Playgrounds and parks in designated zones will be closed, the number of shoppers and guests will be cut in half in shops and restaurants, and opening hours will be allowed until 10pm at the latest. For weeks, they have reported at least a third of the new infections identified in the country from the Community of Madrid. More than 1,500 new cases of coronavirus in Madrid were reported by the Ministry of Health on Friday, which did not update the case figures over the weekend.
