Lung cancer in Hungary is responsible for the death of approximately 8,000 people a year, but if the problem were recognized in time, more than half of the patients would have a chance of survival, writes the Semmelweis University website. Pulmonary oncologist György Losonczy is quoted as saying that 80 percent of lung cancer patients are heavy smokers, and that it would be especially important for them to undergo screening.
In the last fifteen years, the development of lung cancer therapy has accelerated, so that new procedures, including methods of targeted cancer therapy and immunotherapy, can save the lives of patients who are already at an advanced stage more and more frequently. According to Losonczy, lung cancer can be tamed from a fatal disease to a chronic disease. Patients can also recover from metastatic lung cancer with new drugs.
