The prosecutor’s office proposed the imprisonment and confiscation of 135 million forints of bribery money against László Bige, the billionaire king of fertilizers; He was informed of the accusation at 24.hu.
What spectacular actions the authorities have launched since the end of 2018 László Bige Against the billionaire king of fertilizers, the accusation ended in such silence, at least in the case that caused Nyíregyháza police to arrest the country’s fifth richest businessman for 48 hours a year ago. According to Forbes, Bige’s wealth declined from 110 to 92 billion forints in one year, so he fell to 14th place in the newspaper’s ranking, but this is not the businessman’s biggest problem at the moment.
There was a huge uproar around Bige’s sulfuric acid plant in Szolnok in November 2018, with 300 police officers and disaster relief personnel occupying the site. As we reported, the factory was investigated for violating the waste management order and other crimes, and the factory was soon closed. The other crimes involved were not disclosed by the authorities, but even without this, the case seemed serious, since in the case of hazardous waste, the sentence could be up to eight years. Bige, on the other hand, did not speak about an environmental problem, but about the campaign against his company, and named it Sándor Csányi, the head of the OTP Bank, saying that his long-standing fight is linked to official actions. He claimed that the attack was aimed at forcing him to sell the region’s largest nitrogen fertilizer plant.
Bige was arrested last spring and was also wanted by the police. At the time, 24.hu first announced that the owner of Bige Holding had not been questioned in the known case so far, due to a violation of the waste management order, but was suspected of bribery. However, police did not disclose details that cited the interests of the investigation.
After a long game, Bige was able to restart her sulfuric acid plant, but the bribery case became more serious. The investigation was closed and, as it discovered on the 24th, the prosecution filed charges against the billionaire.
This time, the prosecution declined to provide details on the nature of the bribery case, and we were told that the accused was not a public figure. The Nyíregyháza Court responded to our document that the indictment was received on April 21, giving them three months to examine the documents and deliver the indictment in view of the emergency. This has not been done so far due to the large volume of documents, said the court, which also did not provide information on the identity of the accused, citing the protection of personal data.
Still, we know that the accusation has already reached Biges, and although the great contractor did not respond to our newspaper, his lawyer, Péter Zamecsnik confirming our knowledge, he replied that “the concept of the bribery charge is completely unfounded.”
In the middle of the great silence, he gives some handrails during the two weeks on the county news portal. György Martossy A statement signed by the Attorney General, who does not name Bigé, only mentions one businessman, so he remained uncontrolled, but in turn deduces the alleged crime. According to them, Bigé is accused by the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Attorney General’s Office of committing commercial bribes, such as
According to the indictment, he manipulated during the sale of the product he manufactured, for which he requested and received 135 million HUF from his company’s client.
According to the prosecution, Bige agreed with a contractor to deliver thousands of tons of product to him, the distributor will sell it for less than the market price, in part without an invoice, and will deliver the amount to the billionaire. Who, in return, undertook to devalue the deposited product with the contractor later on the basis of a quality complaint, so that the distributor can also benefit.
All this happened in 2010, when, according to the prosecutor’s office, the businessman who sold the product in cash, without an invoice, returned HUF 135 million to Bigé, who did not pay his own company.
The prosecution proposed the confiscation of the bribery money, which the investigating authority has already confiscated from László Bige’s bank account, and considers a new fine of HUF 20 million necessary. He also asks for a prison sentence for the billionaire, but in case he testifies at the preparatory meeting and waives his right to a trial,
the accusation would be content with two years in prison suspended for five years.
In an article from last year, HVG discovered that Bigé is suspected of an old business transaction in which he allegedly sold fertilizers at a non-commercial price. The newspaper argued that since there was only one suspect in the case, even though the bribe required two, the partner was able to vomit up Bige, saving her skin.
At the same time, according to the summary published in the indictment, our other source, who is more familiar with the case, believes that what is described there is not for bribes, but for embezzlement and budget fraud. They have a term of eight years and the accusation was carried out in 2010, so no sanction could be imposed on them.
