Today agreed Rheinmetall Hungary and HT Division Zrt. On the establishment of a joint subsidiary, whose objective would be to develop and manufacture military vehicles in Hungary with the participation of an unidentified foreign investor. The acquisition of two types of combat vehicles has recently emerged from the Turkish side: one is NMS 4×4, a light armored multipurpose military vehicle and the other is Ejder Yalcin, a larger 4×4 wheeled armor in MRAP configuration.

We received a brief announcement of the agreement from the companies stating that development and production of military vehicles could begin during 2021.

So it’s probably not about “copying” Nurol Makina’s military vehicles one at a time, but simply forming the basis of a family of combat vehicles adapted to national (and European) needs.

How can the new 4x4s look?

To find out exactly what the new Hungarian military vehicles will look like, it is worth taking a look at the two mentioned 4x4s, the NMS and the Ejder Yalcin. In relation to both vehicles, one can find features that were of utmost importance in the context of recent power development acquisitions: modular and versatile.

the NMS a dynamic and agile vehicle that provides high protection to its personnel against a wide range of threats as well as high mobility. It has excellent and egonomic off-road capabilities, capable of penetrating down to a 90-centimeter deep ditch or ditch, or climbing a 70% grade.

It uses modular armor, which means that the armor protection of a military vehicle can be tailored to its mission and certain elements of the armor can be installed and removed with minimal effort. In addition, the SMN provides adequate protection against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), as well as against small arms. The big advantage of the vehicle is that it is specifically flat, so it doesn’t tip over as easily in an IED explosion as most US MRAPs.

The NMS is available with a number of features: there is a 7-person reconnaissance passenger transport unit, as well as anti-tank and air defense versions. It can also be equipped with a 7.62-millimeter machine gun, a 12.7-millimeter machine gun, or a 40-millimeter grenade launcher; All of these weapon systems can be controlled from the vehicle body. It can also be optionally equipped with various camera systems and digital control systems.

the Ejder Yalcin a larger vehicle capable of carrying 9 people, giving you an even wider range of missions to complete. In addition to the combat tasks that the NMS can perform (air defense, vehicle neutralization, infantry support), the Ejder Yalcin can also function as a command vehicle, ambulance, jamming station, explosives dismantling vehicle and radar vehicle. .

Thanks to its design, its off-road capability is also better than that of the NMS in many respects: it can even cross a 1.1 meter deep ditch or ford.

The armor of the vehicle is less modular than the NMS, but can also be equipped with nuclear, biological and chemical protection (CBRN).

It is not yet clear how the Hungarian development will differ from the configuration of the Turkish combat vehicle types, we will probably be able to find out more about this as the project progresses.
