Contradictory news came to light in the Spanish press about whether Lionel Messi could leave Barcelona for free or just for the purchase price (700 million euros). Some sources knew that Messi could leave without a termination price in the last year of his contract (until the summer of 2021), while others, including Joan Gaspart, former president of Barcelona, have denied the claim. The latter seems to be right.
“The contract is in force and there is an ‘exit clause’ in the event that Lionel Andrés Messi initiates an early and unilateral termination of his contract. In practice, this means that Lionel Messi can only change teams if someone pays the purchase price of 700 million euros.
