Right in the middle of a crisis, it’s just cynical to tell people that they don’t deserve their pay for working in the same way as someone who receives it. Katalin Novák is in a fortunate position, she could recognize the benefits of earning the same as a minister as a male colleague. On the other hand, cynicism is when you forget that the majority society is not so lucky.
Don’t think that women should constantly compete with men. Do not think that we should compare ourselves to each other at every moment of our life and that we should have at least the same position, at least the same salary as the other.
– In 2020, it can only be said that this statement by the Minister of Family Affairs, Katalin Novák, is incorrect or that it deliberately sends a harmful, harmful and silly message to women who are already working, working or simply studying.
Katalin Novák is a living example of how being a woman in a markedly masculine environment such as politics, you can receive the same salary for the work done as a man in the same position. The law that regulates the remuneration of ministers does not distinguish by gender, the amount of the basic monthly salary is 1.9 million HUF gross, and together with the salary of the representatives it can be 3 million HUF gross. The salaries of parliamentarians, ministerial leaders and secretaries of state are rightly not tied to their external attributes, such as number of members, or simply whether someone is male or female. One thing the law defines, very correctly, is that everyone earns the same amount in the same position.
The majority society, which tries to work in the private sector, is not in such a blessed position: after the minimum wage, all wages can be decided by managers according to their own considerations. Basically, the legislators did not make stipulations because they assumed that the market could decide that there could be a difference between the duties of workers A and B, the quality of their work or their skills and workload. However, there is also the well-intentioned assumption that all people with the same skills and performance are entitled to the same referral at the end of the month.
The reality, on the other hand, is that, according to a Eurostat survey, Hungarian women earn on average 11.2 percent less per hour than Hungarian men. This gap, with current favorable trends, is expected to disappear in 67 years.
Katalin Novák jumped these 67 years in time, she can already receive the same salary as her male colleagues in the same position. However, the experience of the Hungarian majority society is precisely that working beyond the retirement age is not enough for anyone, so the message from above is “give up!” both unfair and cynical.
Furthermore, in 2020, it is a mistake not only to say this, but perhaps even to think it, because, unlike the credit crisis of 2008-2009, the nature of the current economic crisis has put women in a much worse position, based in an outdated line of reasoning. The minister also uses: woman = family. After the closure of schools in Hungary, it is clear that Mom will stay home with the children. This line of thinking also brings with it the fact that the manager of the company will first lay off the female employees, as he will now take math classes instead of, say, doing the company’s accounting. And those who do not have children will be asked in confidence in the job interview how old their parents are, if they become coronavirus, then who will have to take care of them.

Due to the little trap of the last thousands of years, many careers are hardly open to women, while those that do are tourism, hospitality, the service sector, etc. – are now counting their last florins at the box office, once the epidemic has toppled them. A member of the government, a minister in such a situation, on the other hand, does not tell those who live in tourism to give up. He gives support, writes a tender, takes away the tax, gives some crutches, says he doesn’t have to give up, he has to try. These were also included in the list of measures because the state recognized its own task.
Katalin Novák, as a woman who reached the top, a potential role model should now say, “You don’t give up either!” In a forced situation where a group is so adversely affected by the economic and health situation, when a track slides into the abyss, a safety net must be pulled, the employer must be supported not to kick the women, to allow more permits once school is closed. We must help eliminate injustices, support that trajectory. As Minister of Family Affairs, he would also have room for maneuver.
As a family decision-maker, it can be recognized that most two-income families would also have to pay the woman, not just what she receives, but what she deserves. Single women would have even more right to have someone lend them a hand and defend what is not a gift, a grace, but what is coming because, in the same way, they have worked hard for it.
