Suspending postponed surgeries will ease the burden on Hungarian healthcare, the Human Resources Minister said on Kossuth Radio on Wednesday. Good morning Hungary! which was seen by MTI.

It was said in the broadcast: according to the current decree, all postponed health interventions and surgeries must be suspended in publicly funded health institutions and hospitals that provide active care to hospitalized patients.

He noted that within this, the suspension of postponed surgeries eases the burden on Hungarian medical care and frees up doctors who “can participate more actively in the fight against the virus.”

He explained that in the event of a life-threatening condition, emergency interventions should continue, as well as all surgeries whose postponement may cause permanent damage to health. All cancer care, organized cancer screening, heart care, and transplants should continue.

Miklós Kásler also reported that 77 hospitals were losing up to 40 percent of their funded beds for the care of coronavirus patients, and 7 percent of their intensive care units had to be prepared. In the Minister’s opinion, this does not compromise care for other diseases. He said that time-proportional mortality is 4-5,000 lower this year than usual, the “isolated lifestyle” has significantly reduced the number of infections and prevented the development of many potential diseases.
