János Németh, former president of the Constitutional Court, passed away at dawn on Monday – it can be read on the website of the Eötvös Loránd University School of Law (ELTE).

János Németh was born in 1933 in Újpest. He graduated from Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Law in 1956 with a summa cum laude degree and later became a professor at the faculty. Over the decades, he taught generations of law students in the Civil Procedural Law Department, then as its full professor, and in the last decade and a half as professor emeritus. He was elected to the presidencies of foreign and international professional companies, received various national and international professional awards and high state awards, and was vice-rector general of Eötvös Loránd University between 1993 and 1997.

In addition to his university teaching work, he served as a renowned lawyer and arbitrator.At the time of the regime change, he was elected president of the National Electoral Commission, a position he held until 1997, when he was elected a constitutional judge. In 1998 he was elected president of the Constitutional Court. Until his retirement in 2003, he presided over the Constitutional Court and was Rapporteur Judge in several important cases.

Professor János Németh returned to treating civil procedural law and university education as emeritus. In 2010, he was assigned a leadership role in the preparation of a new code of civil procedure, which can be read on the website of the Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Law.
