Throughout his career, he has played with some of the most famous and acclaimed bands in the world, but according to his fans, he has performed just as easily in the company of jazz musicians or rock stars.

In 1955, he was the first Israeli musician to perform in the Soviet Union. His career lasted until the early 1990s, and Gitlis even lectured in his old age.

He was a committed supporter of the Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation process. In addition to his successful music career, he has also served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.
