The Austrian barn announced on Friday that Alex Albon, who is ill this year, will be replaced by Perez next year, so the Mexican driver will be Max Verstappen’s partner in Formula One.
“It was an incredibly difficult decision,” Christian Horner told Motorsport.com when asked what the reasons were behind Perez’s confirmation.
“I think we all wanted to see Alex succeed. We said we would give Alex a season and we would not make a decision in front of him to have a lot of data available. And so we did. ”
“But if we look at the data and the proportions between the two drivers, we can say that our decision was very determined by that.”
“It was simply impossible to ignore Sergio’s performance at Racing Point throughout the year, and especially in the second half of the season.”
“So it was a very, very difficult decision and it made it even more difficult for Alex to be a lovable guy. However, he will remain an important member of the team in 2021, focusing primarily on developments in 2022. And of course he will focus on having the opportunity to return in 2022.
According to Horner Pérez will have no problem competing with a top team.
“He’s already a very well-rounded racer and he has a kind of knack for outperforming the car at his disposal. If we look at the podium results he has achieved over the years, I think it will be a great asset to the team. I think his contract also shows that we are determined to fight Mercedes next year. ”
