Former car driver Alan van der Merwe said Grosjean also did a lot to be successful and praised the driver for getting out of his car alone. He considered that several factors favored them, without which the outcome of the events could have been different, but he emphasized the importance of their preparations.
“A bit instinctive, but it also depends a lot on preparations. We have never seen such a combination, nor a fire like it, since I was the driver of a medical car. Much of the situation was new and unfamiliar terrain, we talked a lot about different scenarios, but it was really insane. Half of the car was there, the other half couldn’t be seen anywhere other than a giant fireball. We literally had a few seconds to stop. Van der Merwe thanked Twitter for being a co-worker with Roberts and the late Charlie Whiting, as well as Sid Watkins, who laid the foundation for F1 safety today. He also thanked Jean Todt, President of the FIA, who also personally visited Grosjean in the hospital.
