In 2020, Sony expanded its fleet with an OLED TV of unprecedented size. The fantasy A9 model has a 48-inch diagonal, and the company, and no one else before this year, had such a small OLED device.
Sony has packed practically everything it has in this device and we have been able to see what the Japanese company is capable of doing among the best televisions.
Image quality
Of course, the design, the sound and the smart TV system are important, but a TV is still basically determined by the quality of the picture. In the case of the A9, the sturdy foundation is provided by the OLED screen made by LG Display, which has been supplemented by Sony’s image processing chip, which contains various complicated algorithms and image modification procedures. This last component also plays a very important role, as it is responsible, among other things, for color accuracy and visualization of movement, which is a key factor in judging image quality.
In our experience, the Sony A9 excels in this area! Thanks to the unique pixel control provided by OLED, the contrast couldn’t be better, colors shine from within, no annoying haze is felt. According to our measurements, the coverage of the color space is enormous and the color accuracy is also adequate. Since there is no backlight here compared to LED and LCD TVs, you don’t have to fear the disturbing cloud effect. The device, of course, guarantees a screen of 4K resolution, that is, 3840 x 2160 pixels. With a relatively small image diagonal, this resolution guarantees a high pixel density, so the detail is excellent. The TV received the company’s enhancement technology, which is theoretically capable of enhancing lower-resolution materials, but despite turning it on, we didn’t see any significant changes. So it really looks like Sony hasn’t been able to conjure pixels out of thin air either.
The maximum refresh rate is 120 Hz, which means that the TV can display twice the number of frames per second than traditional models.
And this is especially important for games. The motion screen is fine anyway, we did not experience any serious anomalies. The model supports the display of high dynamic range videos, images and games. In other words, the brightness of each image detail varies depending on the content of the current image. This results in a very realistic visual world on paper, and since the brightness is high enough, around 1000 nit, so a The HDR effect is especially spectacular.
Sound quality
The Sony A9 TV is the company’s revolutionary audio technology kerud. The device does not have speakers in the traditional sense, as sounds are produced by vibrating the screen. This is a very interesting and viable solution, but we don’t think it results in particularly better sound quality than we are used to with traditional TVs.
There are no sound defects, but the clarity is not perfect, the deep sounds are little felt, there are also problems to reproduce the perfect stereo sound field, so an external home theater or sound projector is a must if someone really wants quality sound.
Android on TV
Years ago at Sony’s house, they decided not to spend energy or money to create their own smart TV system, but to take over the Android-based platform developed by Google. They have been doing this ever since, which is why they also integrated the Android TV smart system into the A9 TV. Now it is stable enough, no problem with its speed, but the graphical user interface too opaque due to too large icons. If you want to find something, you have to scroll and scroll a lot, and they haven’t saved any ads.
On the other hand, it is positive that it also communicates in Hungarian and can therefore be used in a relatively short time.
One of the greatest strengths of Android TV is the wide range of applications that grows above all rival solutions. The user can choose from more than five thousand applications, among which of course there are popular online streaming applications. So there is also Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, and Spotify. There is no shortage of popular social sites or even super graphic games. The latter could theoretically allow someone to use television as a game console. However, due to the very weak hardware, which is inferior to even the cheapest smartphones, it is not possible to run them. It’s too bad, we don’t understand why you have to save money on an expensive pico TV.
Minimalist exterior
Following the usual strategy of recent years, the Japanese company once again broke the spear with its trend of minimalist design in its OLED television. Due to the extremely flat base, at first glance it is as if the screen is lying on the table without any support, which is a really striking solution. However, the disadvantage is that, for example, a sound projector can no longer be placed in front of it so that it does not obscure a part of the screen, and the rotation of the screen can also be forgotten.
The coffees are of course very thin and are flush with the screen, making them invisible when turned off. The overall effect is futuristic and elegant, nothing flashy, but it looks like it’s no ordinary model. Of course, it has WiFi and the connectors you expect today, so you can easily connect an external audio material, media player, computer, or game console.
Libra
Sony has put a small TV on the table in the person of the A9. The sound is basically good, as is the control, the design is excellent, and the image quality is phenomenal. Due to its relatively small size, it can also work for gamers.
On the other hand, the great knowledge is sadly reflected in the price, as they charge around half a million guilders for it, clearly making it one of the most expensive TVs of this size and resolution.
