The National Center for Public Health (NNK) posted information on the health effects of cold weather on Facebook on Thursday. Cold weather can also cause skin problems and, in more severe cases, heart pain.
By Thursday, the air had cooled noticeably. Compared to the previous day, the temperature dropped significantly in most of the country, 10 degrees in the southern half of the country and 15 degrees in the southern border region.
According to the NNK figure, cold weather can cause increased tearing, runny nose, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, limited movement, and can also cause joint swelling and stiffness. The cold dries out the skin, which can itch, swell, peel, whiten the extremities, and cause numbness and pain.
In more severe cases, arrhythmias and heart pain can even occur.
The NNK has formulated several pieces of advice. He highlighted the layers, wearing a hat, scarf and gloves. Wet clothing and shoes should be changed to dry as soon as possible. It is recommended to move in the cold, as it improves circulation. As there is a risk of freezing below minus 10 degrees, it is not recommended to hold a metal object without gloves.
Cooled body parts should not be rubbed, but rather warmed with warm water, they noted. Also, drinking plenty of fluids has been suggested, but alcohol should be avoided because it increases heat release and dilates blood vessels.
It is also important to eat fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C. It is recommended to use creams rich in vitamin E and oils on the face and hands, as shown in the figure from NNK.
On Fridays, the lows are usually between minus 14 and minus 8 degrees, but in some places it can be colder than minus 15-20 degrees. Highs across the country are expected to be between minus 8 and minus 1 degrees. According to the national medium-term forecast of the National Meteorological Service, it is necessary to prepare for a freezing cold even during the weekend, in some cases it can measure minus 20 degrees in the morning.
