The 34-year-old French driver crashed into the three-corner lane lane after departure, his car broke down in two on a regular basis, and the spilled fuel immediately ignited and burned with a large flame. Grosjean had to free himself from their encounter,
according to official Haas data, he spent 28 seconds in the flames,
until he was finally able to get out of the wreck and, with the help of members of the rescue team, he left the scene of the accident.
It was like a furnace, we only saw the red flames and then we noticed it trying to free itself, which little by little it succeeded.
Reported Roberts, who was among the first to arrive at the crash site.
There was a firefighter who started putting out very early, and the gunpowder extinguisher smothered the flames so much that when Romain was high enough we were able to rescue him over the damaged railing.
Said Roberts, who said they only had a few seconds to help the runner, as the flames reignited after all this time.
The specialist added that if Grosjean hadn’t been able to get up from his seat on his own, they wouldn’t have had a chance to rescue him in a fire like that.
Roberts said the first thing he did was verify that the rider was no longer in mortal danger, after which he was immediately removed from the scene of the accident.
Grosjean posted Sunday night on Haas’s barn, as well as his own Facebook page, with a video of his hospital bed. The French driver suffered burns on both hands, but other than that, he is fine and stressed that he owes his life to a HALO system called halo that protects the drivers’ heads, which is mandatory in F1 since 2018 and to which he himself objected previously.
