Index – Sport – 266 million pumps by Dominik Szoboszlai

The Hungarian soccer team can participate in their fourth European Championship: after 1964, 1972 and 2016 they managed to return to the tournament by defeating Iceland in the playoffs. Great success can also be accurately measured in money, and now we are experimenting with that.

The European Football Association (UEFA) has previously announced the prize money for the exit from the European Championship and the result obtained in the tournament. With Dominik Szoboszlai bombarding the ball into Hannes Halldórsson’s goal in the 92nd minute, the Hungarian team, the Hungarian Football Association, pocketed € 9.25 million. With this, we march towards the most brutal group in the history of the European Championships, where the winner of the 2016 European Championship Portugal, the silver medalist of the 2016 European Championship, the 2018 world champion France and the medalist bronze medal of the 2016 European Championship, the 2014 world champion Germany.

If we catch a single point against any of our opponents, we will fatten MLSZ revenue by 750 thousand euros, if we beat one of our group opponents with a world famous feat, another 1.5 million. If we fix our 2016 result and move from the group to the round of 16, they will be rewarded with 2 million euros.

Considering the strength of the rivals, such a triumphant march would be a rather unlikely feat, but it would bring to the kitchen 14.25 million euros, which is 5,558 million florins at the current exchange rate of florins. If we close the group without a point, we will receive “only” the amount owed for the exit, which is HUF 266.2 million.

For the 2016 performance, UEFA referred just over 3.5 billion to MLSZ, which was 34 percent more revenue in 2016 compared to the 2012 European Championship: 1.9 billion euros. The organization expected around 2 billion euros in revenue from this year’s European Championships, but the mere fact that the tournament had to be postponed to next year has cut an estimated 400 million euros.

The coronavirus situation could reshape the entire World Cup, UEFA could even remove several cities from the ranks if they face economic or other difficulties, and in mid-October, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin suggested the deal it could be reduced to a single country. .

Advertising pocket can change

All of this affects pay, too, so we asked a sports economist what to expect. Gábor Szabados also sees that the Covid infection could thoroughly rewrite UEFA’s plans.

“The possible change in the amount that can be distributed cannot be influenced by the presence of spectators in stadiums either, since it is a minor item compared to advertising and television revenues. But this is how the sponsors will react.

It has been suggested, for example, that to avoid travel, the tournament should not be held in 12 European venues, but in one country. This, in turn, means completely different advertising terms, which can modify endorsement agreements. However, it is not worth waiting for information from the European Football Association before the beginning of next year. “

Abruptly up

The European association can see a huge increase in income in the area of community settlements, in parallel with the increase in remuneration. Since 1992, there has been a more than 13-fold increase in prize money. In the Swedish tournament, 28 million euros in foreign currency were distributed, rising to 66 million euros in four years. The total prize pool for the 2004 Portuguese tournament was € 301 million in 2016. Teams are originally scheduled to receive € 371 million in revenue from the European Championship, which will be postponed from 2020 to 2021.
