Index – Science – NASA has found water on the moon

NASA scientists have found “unquestionable” evidence that there is water on the moon, the US space agency said. The discovery could be of great importance for the future of space exploration.

Scientists had previously noticed signs of hydration in the celestial body, but at that time they were not yet able to determine whether hydrogen appeared only as hydroxyl or water molecules. However, recent surveys at a NASA facility called SOFIA, which is essentially a converted Boeing 747 aircraft with a 10-foot telescope flying to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere, have been able to verify that there is indeed water on the Moon. However, it is not yet clear to researchers how water can be created or retained in the moon’s ambient atmosphere.

In the absence of a dense atmosphere, the water on the side of the Moon that the sun currently illuminates should evaporate in no time. However, it remains in the celestial body.

Said Casey Honniball, lead author of the scientific study summarizing the results.

According to NASA, the result of the research may open up new opportunities for moon research and space travel within the solar system. This is because the presence of water could facilitate the creation of a space base on the Moon, so that spacecraft and spacecraft traveling within the Solar System could be replenished here with oxygen, water and fuel.
