The light bulb came to Edison after a series of developments and patents. The story begins in 1802 with Humphry Davy’s arc lamp. By the way, Davy is an explorer of many chemical elements – sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, among others – and laughing gas. Davy was the first to generate light using electricity using Alessandro Volta’s galvanic cell published in 1799.
In 1841, Frederick de Moleyns patented the first light bulb in which platinum fibers glowed in a vacuum. There were still technical problems with the vacuum cleaner production at the time and the first few bulbs would usually go out after a short period of use.
In 1874, Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans patented a carbon fiber incandescent lamp, but commercial success fell short. Albon Man and William Sawyer were the first to form an incandescent lamp company in 1878 under the name Electro-Dynamic Company, a few months before Edison also began his performances. The Man and Sawyer bulb was very fragile due to a design flaw. The Electro-Dynamic company ceased to exist in 1880.
At that time, serious obstacles still existed to the propagation of the bulbs. This was partly due to the non-existent electrical infrastructure, the technical difficulties of mass production of vacuum glass spheres, and the immaturity of the filaments.
The first successful incandescent lamp was patented by Joseph Swan in 1879 after he perfected the vacuum pump himself. Swan’s bulb lasted longer without blackening; all he had to do was that its thick low resistance filament required very high electrical power. Edison ended up using this fine, high-strength, improved carbon fiber made from bamboo.
Edison then toured the public at the time as the inventor of the incandescent lamp. This eventually led to conflict: They sued Swan against each other. Swan won the lawsuit. Edison then formed a joint venture with Swannel Edison & Swan Electric Light Company, abbreviated as Ediswan. Years later, Edison eventually bought Swant out of the company, thus successfully fighting to invent the incandescent lamp.
