Index – National – Total mortality in Hungary did not increase until mid-October

The coronavirus epidemic appears to have no effect on mortality, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO) data series, which can be read weekly for several years.

Even after a long look at the dataset, it is not easy to assess the situation, as the data varies from week to week, and the data from last year and this year are almost the same face to face. The October 11 data was last uploaded to the OSC stock. According to this, a total of 2,470 people died in Hungary in the middle of the week of October, while a year earlier, in the week that started on October 7, 2019, 88 people died, that is, 2,382.

At a press conference for operational staff in October, Ágnes Galgóczy briefly pointed out that while the number of deaths from coronavirus shows a constant upward trend on a daily basis,

In the context of the coronavirus, looking back over the past 10 years, total mortality is no higher now than it was in the past 10 years.

According to the latest data, 2,438 people have died in Hungary as a result of the pandemic, but in previous years, an average of 2,500 people have died per week. That is, if we average the number of deaths from early March to today, then an average of 69 people died from coronavirus per week.

Furthermore, compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths among those over 65 years of age decreased. However, the statistics do not include the youngest age group. The youngest victim of the epidemic in Hungary was a 21-year-old woman.

By reading the data on the CSO website, the most common causes of death are also quantified. According to this, last year the majority of people died from neoplasms (14,471 people) and other heart diseases (14,685 people). In addition to cerebrovascular disease (6507 people), the number of deaths in motor vehicle accidents (205 people) is also indicated in the data series. Of course, the Covid-19 virus is not reported as a death among the 2019 statistics.

There is an explanation for the riddle.

The virus of mortality, difficult to interpret at first, will also be modified by the influenza virus at the beginning of the year. According to health specialist Gabriella Lantos, the average number of people who lose their lives due to some complication of the flu is between 3,000 and 5,000 a year.

At the same time, it can be said that the effects of the coronavirus are not yet noticeable in the Hungarian mortality statistics. It is true that this is partly due to the fact that, by the way, there were fewer fatal traffic accidents, for example, during spring curfews, as people normally stayed at home for long weeks. But the chances of developing other deadly infections have also been drastically reduced due to distance, wearing of masks, teleworking / distance learning, and voluntary quarantine.

However, there were some 170,000 more deaths in Europe between March and June 2020 than in the same period of the last four years, according to a statement from the EU statistical office (Eurostat) on Monday, the main reason being the epidemic of coronavirus. .
