“The people of Újpalota are going to need a lot of patience, because the information from the capital revealed that the problem with the Drégelyvár utca overpass is much greater than you had imagined, it should be practically rebuilt,” said the mayor of the 15th district, Angéla Cserdiné Németh.
Already in the spring, one of the main transportation routes for the people of Újpalota, the overpass on Drégelyvár Street that leads to the city center, had to be closed, causing daily inconvenience to many. Now, however, it turns out that the problem is much bigger than previously thought.
Deputy Mayor Kata Tüttő said the problem is much bigger and much more complex than the planned renovation could have solved. She went on to say that when the contractor demolished the bridge at the beginning of the spring renovation, it turned out that the crossing was not built the way it should be.
We’re talking about a 47-year-old overpass that was last touched in 1989.
– explained the deputy mayor and added that the capital had asked experts from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) for static tests and it turned out that the structure of Drégelyvár street was in a life-threatening condition:
It should be practically built with your fingers.
He also claimed that the remodel contract would be modified and a lifetime extension would be carried out to ensure the usability of the overpass for another 10-15 years, which meant that the drivers involved would need patience – just a year later, instead to deliver in December, the overpass renovation can be completed by the end of 2021; read on the BPXV page.
And more work requires more resources: the conclusion of last year’s contract for the first contract of HUF 778 million requires another HUF 344 million.
Kata Tüttő said that the capital has a debt of at least 100 billion HUF in terms of the condition of the bridges. In the last 9 years, Budapest has spent a tenth of the required amount on bridges and overpasses, of which there are about a hundred in the city. However, this debt is only partly due to the non-payment of former mayor István Tarlós, who told the government that there was not enough money for these renovations. Kata Tüttő emphasized that the people of Budapest pay at least 200 billion HUF a year to the state coffers in the form of excise taxes on gasoline, but they see nothing in the form of improvements.
