We must be prepared for the fact that in the next ten years, after the coronavirus epidemic has subsided, the population of the Lake Balaton region will increase significantly, said Jenő Schmidt, president of the National Association of Local Governments (TÖOSZ) . He believes that the population in the riverside settlements will increase, the population further from the lake will decrease, but this will stabilize.

According to Jenő Schmidt, one of the most important questions for the next twenty years will be whether the demand for drinking water will be met. He believes that the special part of Lake Balaton will be a special area for waste management, in which a special collection system will have to be developed.

The main strategic objectives for the coming years will be the restoration, conservation and development of aquatic habitats and wetlands and grasslands, as well as the conservation of the natural values of earth sciences, the dissemination of knowledge on nature conservation and the effective management of protected areas.
