President János Áder appointed Norbert Erdős as Secretary of State for Supervision of the Food Chain effective November 1, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture told MTI on Wednesday.

“As Secretary of State for Food Chain Supervision, my colleagues and I will continue to work to bring high-quality and safe household products to the table of Hungarian families,” the new secretary of state said, citing the statement.

In September it was announced that as of October 1, the Ministry of Agriculture would be under the direct ministerial control of the national chief veterinarian, and therefore of the entire supervision of the food chain, for which Róbert Zsigó was previously responsible.

Róbert Zsigó was a good owner of this area. During the coronavirus epidemic, the national food supply was well scrutinized. At the same time, the emergency situation clearly highlighted that the safety of the food chain is an area of ​​strategic importance, a matter of national security, István Nagy stressed at the time.

According to the announcement of the appointment of the new Secretary of State, the objective of the Ministry of Defense is to continue maintaining or raising the rank of this area, which affects everyone and is also decisive for the national economy.

Norbert Erdős explained that the recent and current pandemic situation has further increased the importance of food sovereignty, and also drew attention to the importance of food chain security. Hungary’s food industry has also passed the examination under these circumstances, and the food safety system is one of the best and most stable in Europe.

He also stressed that I would like to draw people’s attention to the fact that the safety and health of the food chain can only be protected together. Not only responsible business behavior, but conscious buying is essential for this.

Norbert Erdős was born in Orosháza in 1972, between 1998 and 2010 he was a representative of the local government, for four years he was deputy mayor, between 2002 and 2014 he was a member of parliament. Between 2011 and 2014, he was head of government in charge of the Békés County Government Office, and then a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019, where he was also a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee on Fisheries .
