The Senate of the Corvinus University of Budapest declares its solidarity with the Senate of the University of Theater and Film Arts, its employees and students, who defend the autonomy of their university by virtue of their rights enshrined in the Basic Law.

– This is the title and the essence of the proposed resolution, which the Senate of the Corvinus University of Budapest (BCE) would have voted in an extraordinary meeting, but the rector András Lánczi prevented it.

According to correspondence sent to the portal, Senator Gábor Toronyai sent an email to András Lánczi on October 6, in which he wrote that a third of the members of the Senate support the discussion of the issue. you need to call a meeting.

The rector rejected the proposal that day, saying that

The proposed agenda item is not within the competence of the University Senate, so it cannot respond to the request.

A few days later, Gábor Toronyai contacted the Rector in another letter and drew his attention to the fact that according to the regulations of the Senate, if a third of the members initiate the convocation of the meeting in writing, the President of the Senate must convene it within 15 days.

Another member of the Senate, Miklós Rosta, also joined in. He wrote that according to the regulations, the rector has no discretion.

His decision seriously violates the fundamental norms and values of the university, I consider it undemocratic and destroying confidence.

He reacted.

András Lánczi kept his previous position in his replica. Senator Gergely Kováts also joined the correspondence, drawing attention to the fact that what is happening at SZFE affects all university communities, including Corvinus, because it sets a precedent for what can and cannot be done with a university. The rector acknowledged that what was happening in the SZFE was important, but said that “it does not follow in principle or in practice” that the Corvinus Senate should address this. Not for political reasons, but for institutional autonomy and integrity, and because

because Hungarian universities really have to carry out their own regime change, otherwise sooner or later they will not be necessary.
