In January this year, EMMI encrypted exactly how many people in Hungary are waiting to be housed in a state nursing home.

Péter Ungár, the LMP Member of Parliament approached EMMI with a public interest request to find out.

The numbers show dynamic growth. It seems that between January 2019 and 2020, the number of waiters per 100 people increased from 42 to 53

Péter Ungár said at his online press conference on Friday.

The politician added, all this means that more than half of the existing capacities would already be filled with the waiting list itself. Expressed at the same time, it means waiting years, not months, if it turns out that a relative has to be transferred to a nursing home for some reason.

The situation is already dramatic, but its difficulty is yet to come, according to the forecast of Péter Ungár, who also spoke about the fact that in light of the figures we have just learned

Hungary remains a leader in the EU in terms of how much it spends on caring for the elderly.

The Member of Parliament also emphasized that home carers currently receive 38,000 and 58,000 HUF, respectively, if they are not taking care of their children, in most cases sick elderly relatives.

These tail numbers also show that home care is not a task done, but an obligation in which individuals, families are ruined and impoverished.

He also said at the press conference.

However, if the state does not increase the number of places in nursing homes, as well as the level of home care fees, this social tragedy will only worsen and increasingly unworthy situations will arise among the elderly and Hungarian families, said Péter Ungár.
