Viktor Orbán has announced in a Facebook video after today’s meeting of the Council of Elders that the elderly can buy in a protected lane from 9 to 11 from Monday to Friday, which means that only they can be in the store during this period. On weekends, the senior shopping time zone is available from 08:00 to 10:00.

The decree was explained by the Prime Minister as follows:

Seniors can shop at any time, but there is a protected time zone where only they can stay in stores.

The regulation was necessary because it is the most vulnerable age group.

Katalin Novák The Minister without a Family Portfolio spoke with members of the Council of Elders on Monday morning, as a result of which they proposed to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán that

Return to a shopping bar available only for seniors.

The Minister without a Family Portfolio argued that, given the experience of spring, all this would be of great help in the daily life of the group over 65 years of age with the highest risk of contracting the coronavirus.

After the meeting, Katalin Novák told the public media that, based on the opinion of the Council of Elders, Viktor Orbán would be asked to return the shopping bar to the elderly with a different practice than in the spring.

The minister also revealed that the proposal would reduce shopping hours for the elderly from three to one or two hours, and only during the week and at a time when store turnover is already low.

At the same time, based on the proposal, Katalin Novák also emphasized the importance of older people being able to shop freely at any time outside the hours reserved for them.

Cities where the senior shopping bar already lives

As the Index previously wrote, Ferenc Szalay, the mayor of Szolnok, announced in early November that due to the growing epidemic, the 65+ senior shopping band will be reintroduced in three local markets from 8am to 10am on Monday .

A few days later, for the same reason, Róbert Fülöp, the mayor of Kiskunhalas, also decided that only people over 65 could shop at the local market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 am to 12 pm Besides them, only merchants and other market workers may be present in local markets during that period.

The nationwide rule was first enacted on March 28 that grocery stores, drug stores, markets, and drug stores could only be visited by people over the age of 65 between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Along with the emergency, the shopping streets were finally removed by the parliament in mid-June.
