We are surprised to announce that Laci Benkő, co-founder of Omega, passed away after a long illness. The dominant figure of Hungarian rock music is mourned by millions of fans and admirers both at home and abroad.

László Benkő began his studies in the capital. He began playing music in high school, was a member of the Benkó Dixieland Band for a short time, and later played in the Prophet band, one of Omega’s predecessors.

Omega was founded in September 1962. In the ensemble’s first decade, Benkő’s role changed several times: first he played the piano and then the organ. Starting in 1968, with the appearance of Gábor Presser, he became another keyboard player in the group, when Benkő played various instruments: flute (Shout, sing, If it could be the wind), trumpet (Frederick trumpet, Old chicks), I will quote (Double Kállai)He also occasionally played the piano with Presser on organ.

In the early years, when western hits were processed, he sang many more times, later among Omega’s own songs, Rosewood and the Sunday numbers. However, since Presser’s departure, he has played exclusively on keyboard instruments, including the synthesizer that Omega first used in Hungary in 1973. Omega 6 – I don’t know your name the elaborate synthesizer solos were a defining element of the record’s sound and the space rock era from 1976 to 1979. His first composition was XX. century city dweller volt. It is difficult to determine with certainty which can be considered his works of later times, because the songs between 1976 and 1987 were recorded collectively, but most likely Benkő has written few songs in Omega, but they are usually among the best.

Of the current members of Omega, the majority composed and played solo or in other productions. It was introduced in 1980 Space opera, whose music he wrote and whose first solo album (Lexikon) was released in 1982.

He has also appeared on Radio Cabaret programs since the 1990s, mostly alongside József Ihos. In 2002, he founded the ensemble B-Project, which plays synthesizer instrumental music. Since 2006, he has been a regular guest artist at Bulldozer concerts. Since 2009 he has been the musical director of the Sándor Weöres Theater in Szombathely. Since 2013, he has been performing regularly with the tribute ensemble Megapolis, exclusively playing the songs of the band Omega. He was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2017, recovered after a persistent struggle, and acted continuously.
