Lőrinc Mészáros was invested as an honorary citizen of Osijek for his unique contribution to the development of sports and the Drava-speaking settlement, the Mészáros Group said. Boris Pilizota, deputy mayor of the city of Slavonia, presented the Hungarian businessman with the diploma certifying honorary citizenship.
Recognition can be given to people who earn eternal merits in the development of the city and its citizens. Lőrinc Mészáros was unanimously elected an honorary citizen by the city council, regardless of his party affiliation.
He sold his stake in the Osijek club to a private equity fund, while László Szjj is also a co-owner of the team.
It was highlighted in the praise that Mészáros Liórinc took on a personal role as owner in Osijek, when in early 2016 he became the majority owner of the NK Osijek football club. Throughout the developments and constructions, he has respected the fans, traditions and interests of the most popular soccer club in the region.
Per the announcement, the improvements brought results and fans, they played a number of international matches in Osijek again and through a successful player policy, the club sold talented footballers at a huge profit as it grew stronger and was no longer impossible. defeat their great rival, Dinamo Zagreb.
The deputy mayor noted that, most importantly, with the help of great local Croatian experts, the implementation of the club’s long-term plans, the construction of the football academy and the new stadium, began at the expense of dozens of millions of euros.

I am glad that together with the team we have successfully achieved the set goals and therefore kept our promise by taking over the NK Osijek football team. This job makes me happy in many ways because I love football, I love Croatia and I love Osijek
Mészáros thanked the recognition. He added that the NK Osijek stadium will soon be the best stadium in Croatia and that they will do their best to become champions and triumph in Europe.
