The Minister without a Family Portfolio reported on an official Facebook page in a recent video that they plan to suspend the shopping bar for people over 65 at the proposal of the Council of Elders.

At the same time, the members of the Council of Elders see tensions rising steadily between different age groups due to the shopping time slot, after more and more people are on leave and there is a growing tumult in the shops.

Therefore, it is proposed that in view of the Christmas period, at least the weekend, but even in its entirety, it is suspended from the protected shopping band.

The elderly shopping band, known since the time of the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic, was taken back by the government on November 23.

The public was first informed about the reintroduction of the measure from Katalin Novák’s Facebook video, which was posted by the politician on its official website. The Minister without a Family Portfolio reported that morning that he had spoken with members of the Council of Elders, for which he recommended that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán return to a commercial bar accessible only to the elderly.

The introduction of the well-known over-65 shopping bar was confirmed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a Facebook video that day. The decree was published in the Hungarian Gazette on the night of November 23 and entered into force the following day.

The proposal of the Council of Elders was, and finally, implemented,

Only people over 65 can enter the following stores every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • grocery stores,
  • pharmacies (this includes stores that sell perfumes, drugstores, household cleaners, chemicals and toilet paper),
  • pharmacy,
  • other drug and medical supply stores.
