NASAMS is buying air defense missile systems from the Norwegian companies Kongsberg and the US company Raytheon, reported the Hungarian Armed Forces on the portal honvedelem.hu. The Secretary of the Government Commissioner for Defense Development was informed about the new modernization of defense.

As reported by the Secretariat, the current development will eventually regain the protection capability it has lost due to post-regime redundancies in providing modern short- and medium-range ground air defense systems. Compared to the Soviet Kub complexes, which have been in service since 1976 and will now be replaced, the new equipment will multiply the size of the protected area and the number of targets that can be destroyed at the same time, that is, the possibility of aerial combat of defending.

Modern ground-based anti-aircraft missile systems, which the army will receive from 2023, will play a key role in protecting Hungary’s airspace. This is a historic step, as the Hungarian air defense has not undergone such development for about four decades. We have chosen the solution that best meets federal requirements with NASAMS systems, which are widespread in NATO and also protect the American capital.

– said Gáspár Maróth, government commissioner responsible for defense developments.

NASAMS is also a great option, according to the announcement, as it can also combat airstrikes such as unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and robotic robotic aircraft, against which the national air defense has so far had no or extremely limited capabilities.
