The mayor of Budapest asked the state institutions, asked the shopping malls and large chain stores to make their parking lots and underground garages for free during the curfew, between 7 and 6 in the morning, writes MTI.

Gergely Karácsony wrote in his Facebook post that several district mayors, both pro-government and oppositional, have approached him to find a solution to the chaos caused by free parking.

The introduction of free parking obviously has nothing to do with addressing the epidemic, but recent data shows that about a third of the underlying diseases amplified by the coronavirus may be related to air quality, and “free parking has more than do with this.

He said, adding that the problem could be solved by whoever caused it.

If municipalities have not been consulted before the decision on free parking has been made, then at least now that the problems caused are spectacular, it would be time to consult with them and the Prime Minister to admit that he committed a mistake. Free parking causes serious problems precisely because the current parking regime in Budapest is unsustainable: there are more cars than parking spaces. Additionally, there are more residential permits issued in the downtown districts than there are parking spaces.

He detailed. He added that a solution had to be found, especially in the long term, even after the epidemic. As he writes, they have been working on this new parking regime for a long time, there are many negotiations behind them, quite a few even before them. He added that increasing the number of parking spaces in the short term could be a solution to the chaos caused by free parking.

To do this, I call on state institutions, call on shopping centers, large department store chains so that their parking lots and underground garages are free for the duration of the curfew, between 7 pm and 6 am A.M. This can also be ordered by the government with its extraordinary authority, with the same determination as it did with free parking.

– He said. According to the mayor, it would also contribute to the relief of Budapest if the government made the use of the M0 ring free of charge for the duration of the restrictive measures. Regarding the fact that some mayors of the district request the designation of the exclusive parking lots of the neighbors, he said that this does not require a letter, but that the mayors “according to the law have to develop a transit plan. Gergely Karácsony also wrote that due to the size of the capital and the complexity of the city, it is not possible to copy Győr’s measurements in Budapest one by one.

According to the mayor, “if there is any benefit to unreasonably ordered free parking, it is that it makes clear the problems that we have been living with for many years and that make the transformation of the Budapest parking system urgent.
