Mayor Gergely Karácsony praised Thursday’s meeting of the Budapest Public Development Council (FKT) in the post he posted on his Facebook page with the statement in the caption. According to the mayor, at least

it is about the fact that the capital and then all its initiatives were rejected, in return it was rudely recommended that they then pay and implement the improvements.

According to Gergely Karácsony, one of the problems with this is that the government and the capital do not have money, the taxpayers do. Among them, the people of Budapest have the most (…) – he argued, adding that if something happens, it will be paid by the taxpayers, including the people of Budapest.

In the mayor’s opinion, the government is trying to reduce the room for maneuver and the capacity for action of the opposition municipalities, so that, as he himself said, they can “point the finger and the mantra: al-kal-mat -la-nok “. “The problem with this is that they are actually attacking the local government as such. And it was already in Budapest where the leadership of the city came under tutelage, which is exactly what the majority of Budapest voted against a year ago ”.

The politician sees that in the capital, it is necessary to implement what and how the people of Budapest want. A green city instead of concrete, a livable city instead of prestigious investments.

In his opinion, what the government takes from the people of Budapest with the Budapest tax will return part of it “with great grace”, but – as he pointed out – in such a way that “they want to implement the investments themselves”.

Gergely Christmas finds it hard for the government to believe. “So we are taking the reduction of the Budapest tax, called solidarity contribution, to the FCMC at the initiative of the Fidesz faction in the capital. They said no, they don’t take their own faction seriously either, ”he said, adding that this would make the state a net contributor to Budapest, having to deal with a deficit of around 170 billion due to the epidemic, the crisis economic and the “scourge of government.”

On behalf of the Orbán government, Secretary of State Balázs Fürjes formulated the opposite position. According to him, the meeting of the Metropolitan Public Development Council (FKT) this Thursday was successful and reported an agreement in several areas. The government will deliver the HUF 6 billion previously promised to the capital for the renovation of the Chain Bridge, if the capital commits to not closing the bridge for more than 18 months. The money will be transferred when only this amount is missing. According to Fürjes, they also agreed to the renovation of the Pest docks, agreed to build the dock section of Buda’s interlocking tram network with government funding, and the capital provided support for the development of the Transport Museum.

As for the government to take charge of developments in the capital, the secretary of state said they trust that the proposal will be accepted in part or in full by the municipality of the capital.
