Yes I would be a little disappointed if I didn’t do that

– Cornstein responded to the question of whether it would bother him if the Hungarian government, as in the 2001 Gripen speech, re-elects the Scandinavian types.

They also covered the acquisition of liquefied natural gas (LNG) that is expected to come from the United States in the future. In this regard, the ambassador revealed that the first US shipments could reach Hungary in January. Cornstein was also asked why US President Donald Trump had not visited Hungary until now, and the outgoing ambassador could only answer that the visit would certainly take place in Trump’s second term. Provided, of course, in the November election, American voters again vote confidence in Trump, who is currently 11 percent behind his Democratic rival, Joe Bident.

The rest of the interview focuses on ideological issues. Cornesteinen is being held accountable for letting the Central European University move, an ambassador who has previously publicly pledged to prevent this.

I don’t know to what extent the failure was David Cornstein’s, because the university’s board of trustees and the Hungarian government were involved in the process. We tried to push for the agreement, but unfortunately we were not successful.

The outgoing ambassador replied.

Cornsteinen called the policy of the US embassy too lenient on various issues of the Word of the People. They referred, for example, to the Free Europe news portal launched in September, asking about a page run by the US government: how satisfied was Cornstein with the “neutrality” and “conflict avoidance” of the content posted there. The ambassador responded that he expects a balanced operation of the news portal, that is, if the government is criticized, ask both parties.

The good relations of the Hungarian government with Russia were also discussed in the conversation.

There is no need for the United States to tell the Hungarians who the Russians are.

The American ambassador defended himself. He added that, according to him, because Russia is close and supplies energy to Hungary, “I think the hearts and minds of Hungarians are turning more to the West.”
