In addition to the 2 million HUF tracker charge announced by the police yesterday, civilians have already offered more than 8.7 million HUF to locate those responsible for the oil spill.

The worst oil spill in twenty years has occurred on the Ráckeve (Soroksár) -Danube branch, after unknown persons released large amounts of dense used oil into a storm drain in Szigetszentmiklós last week. The pollution, estimated at six cubic meters, flowing into the Danube arm was trapped by reeds, destroying the special floating bog and coastal vegetation in an area of at least two thousand square meters.

The gravity of the situation is characterized by the presence of a place next to the docks in the reeds where the used oil has a thickness of 20 to 25 centimeters. It may take a week or two more to remove the contaminated reeds, the oil soaked in the binder, and the sludge laden with the oil sludge.

Used oil is extremely harmful to the environment and health because even one liter can convert a million liters of fresh water, or the annual drinking water supply of about 50 people, into wastewater.

Spread over the water, it prevents the flow of oxygen, causing serious damage to flora and fauna.
