On Monday afternoon, we received a letter from one of our readers who wrote that the addiction department of the Gyula Nyírő National Institute of Psychiatry and Addictions would be closing on Wednesday because nurses were being transferred to care for coronavirus patients. His father was treated in the ward, cared for there in late December, and then scheduled to be transferred to a rural institution for rehabilitation. However, due to what happened, he had to take him home on Wednesday, and according to his information, several patients in the ward were in a similar situation. When he called a nurse who worked in the department, she also confirmed all of this. Find the procedure outrageous.

The closure of the entire addiction department seems to be quite a radical measure, and the Covid department at Gyula Nyírő Hospital has not been working until now, so we first looked for information on the institution’s website but could not find it, so we turned to the director for answers.

Szabolcs Kéri, the acting head of the Nyír Hospital, responded quickly, asked for a little patience and today the official answer came from him. This is due to the greater number of patients infected by the coronavirus.

the hospital had to install a Covid ward in 48 hours and it opened on Tuesday.

He acknowledged that nurses and doctors would be transferred to the new ward of staff working in outpatient internal medicine and addiction care, depending on the workload of the Covid ward. We do not receive precise information on the proportion of nurses affected.

The director stated that no patient whose condition requires urgent and immediate medical intervention should return home. Outpatient care is still available in the Addiction Department. Szabolcs Kéri wrote to the Index that they can even increase the capacity here.

As soon as the epidemic situation improves, we will restore full addiction care, as we have done so far.

– stressed the head of the institution.
