Interim municipal elections will be held on Sunday in Mohács, Baranya province, after the council was dissolved in July. In the October 2019 elections, the socialist Ferenc Csorbai became mayor of the settlement, so his official opponent, Fidesz Ferenc Szekó, who had ruled the city since 1998, died unexpectedly last September. Although, in addition to Fidesz, DK, Momentum and Jobbik also called for Csorbai’s resignation, the socialist candidate was the only one to stand. However, his movement was also not rewarded by the people of Mohács, 4,000 of the 6,000 voters voted invalid and only 1,867 votes were cast by him.
The new mayor of Mohács did not expand and took office. Fidesz, on the other hand, promises to dissolve the body as soon as possible.
Mohács is a true Fidesz citadel within Baranya County, which has been a strong bastion of the right for decades. Thus, it is understandable that the MSZP mayor is considered illegitimate by many at the head of the city. Along with the mayor, only three members of the opposition entered the 12-member representative body of the compensation list, and Fidesz was stored in the 8 individual districts.
Csorba didn’t really have much room for maneuver, the leader of the Fidesz faction, Gábor Pávkovics, promised “moderate constructiveness” at the opening meeting, but has already said that they would like to take advantage of the law.
Right-wing MPs also joined in on this, they didn’t really vote for the mayor’s proposals beyond the local government budget. In the summer, the representative body was decided unanimously, and Csorbai finally voted on the self-dissolution proposed by Pávkovics.
During the transition period, the socialist mayor tried to campaign by covering the cases of the former mayor on suspicion of corruption, while his challenger, Gábor Pávkovics de Fidesz, built it with the support of the government. The Minister of Innovation and Technology, László Palkovics, also joined the campaign, for example, who recently visited the settlement and announced that the construction of the Danube Bridge in Mohács could begin within a year and a half.
What does the independent socialist get?
In the interim municipal elections, Csorbai does not campaign with party logos, nor does his publications include the opposition organizations that support him (all opposition parties except Momentum), but will run with his team as a Generation for the candidate. Change (VAN). Pávkovics, on the other hand, relies explicitly on his support for the ruling parties. In addition to the opposition and Fidesz, Nuestro País has also nominated a candidate for mayor and a list in the agreement, and they will nominate Csilla Bernáth for the position of mayor.
Although there is not much chance that Ferenc Csorbai and his team will come back in Sunday’s election, the opposition may emerge from the provisional vote even stronger. If a breakthrough were made, it could have national consequences.
If the opposition gets a good result here, it would be a message that Viktor Orbán should already heed.

In any case, both potential candidates are optimistic. Ferenc Csorbai told the Index:
We would not have stood in the elections if we had not expected to win, but for us, all the results are in our best interest.
The opposition mayoral candidate is in favor of deciding who is better in a fair and clean race. According to Csorbai, Mohács didn’t really have a campaign in the classical sense before, this election brought something new in this, but he was satisfied with his tone, nothing happened that he said was unacceptable.
Gábor Pávkovics also believes in victory, according to him, this year more people will go to the polls than last year, because the future of Mohács is important for everyone. He sees that the October 2019 elections also showed that the people are on the conservative side and that the majority of the people of Mohács reject Csorbaek, so
expect a 60 percent result even in the worst case.
He also evaluates the campaign quite differently than Csorbai, because according to him, while they were campaigning with a 30-page program, his opponent was only busy with expiration and creating anti-government sentiment.
