The average age of HÉV trains is 44 years old, and the oldest car is 54 years old, Balázs Fürjes, Secretary of State for Development of the Prime Minister’s Office in Budapest and the Budapest agglomeration, said on Kossuth Radio on Thursday. .

Among the HÉV trains that evoke the Kádár era, there is also one that was put on the market in 1966.

The Secretary of State also spoke about the fact that by 2025 fifty-four modern trains will arrive in Hungary. We hope they are at least as modern as the line 3 subway cars, where the temperature will be around thirty-five degrees in summer, in the absence of air conditioning, on a warmer day.

Balázs Fürjes added that I would like travelers to reach their destination more quickly and conveniently with minimal transfer. They are also working to reduce the number of congestion in the capital and on the access road network, and to make air and climate transport cleaner.

He said about the renewal of HÉV, public procurement has started and three planning contracts have already been concluded. As part of the development, the HÉV at Csepel and Ráckeve will be extended underground to Kálvin tér so that it can be connected to the metro network.

Longer-term development plans include connecting the HÉV north and south lines with a tunnel under the Danube.

He also mentioned that the detailed construction plans of the HÉV development will be prepared by 2023, the planning and construction tenders will be carried out through an open EU procedure. According to the plans, together with the HÉV tracks and stops, the passenger information and management system will be renewed and connection points with rail transport will be established by 2027.
