At the end of the curfew on Sunday morning, Gábor Rakonczay set out from Gran Canaria with his SUP to cross the Atlantic. No one has ever achieved this extreme SUP tour, the Hungarian athlete may be the first successful crosser.

On his Facebook page on Tuesday, he wrote that he had managed to cover 60 miles so far, which is positive, but he was unable to sleep for an hour. It’s bad news, but it was to be expected: in our interview with him, he said that when he tried to cross the SUP in early 2020, sleeping was the critical point as he did not have a cabin in the building he planned, nor a dry place and windbreaks where it was quiet. conditions in which you can relax. Rakonczay wrote in his Facebook post. By his own calculations, the 51 days would be an exceptionally good driving time, as he calculated the duration of the crossover for the Index between 55 and 65 days before departure.

The athlete crossed the Atlantic in 60 days in 2012 with a canoe, a performance that at the time was a world record. This is his seventh transatlantic voyage, but he has crossed Greenland on foot, climbed Mont Blanc and even hiked with a small team from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole.
