Tamás Szabó (Tomáš Szabó) was found guilty on Thursday of the murder of Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová. According to the verdict, Tamás Szabó committed the murder together with Miroslav Marček, at the request of Zoltán Andruskó. Tamás Szabó was sentenced to 25 years in prison, New Word wrote in Bratislava on Thursday.
Szabó has to pay an additional 140 thousand euros in compensation to the journalist’s family and 40 thousand euros to the family of Péter Molnár in Gúta, also murdered.
Marián Kočner and Alena Zsuzsova, on the other hand, were acquitted: the court determined that they had not been proven to be involved in the 2018 murder.
Kočner, however, was found guilty of illegal weaponry; he had previously confessed it. The court imposed a fine of 5,000 euros for the misdemeanor, which the offender could impose with a five-month prison term, said Ružena Sabová, president of the judiciary.
Kuciak’s family and the mother of the murdered journalist’s fiancee, Zlatica Kušnírová, left the courtroom while the verdict was announced, New Word wrote of the scene.
The case has shaken Slovak politics in recent years and also led to the downfall of Prime Minister Robert Fico.
