Two members of the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot and the movement were arrested for raising the flag of the LGBTQ community over government buildings in Moscow the day before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s birthday.

According to the Russian news agency Interfax, one of the detainees is Nikika Nikulsina. The other member, Marija Aljohina, was arrested as she was leaving the building of an independent Russian television channel called Dozhgy. Two other members of the gang, Vasily Andrianov and Yelizaveta Gyigyerih, were already arrested on Wednesday.

The police, MTI writes, also appeared at the home of one of the movement’s members, Alexander Sofeyev. The law enforcement officers also went to the home of Marija Aljohina’s mother and municipal representative, Ljuszja Stejn.

Although it is not known why the Pussy Riot members were detained, an Interfax report reveals that Andrianov and Gyigyerih were subsequently released from custody on the condition that they appear for the search, which is recorded as a violation of the rules. of meeting.

On its Facebook page, Pussy Riot described the action as a “proportionate response” as they claimed that the Russian state was interfering in the lives of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people and queers. The movement mentioned that the government said it was “killing gay people in Chechnya, trans adopts laws (with the exclusive strengthening of the institution of the family) and persecutes the parents of children born to surrogacy.” The movement put it this way: it intended the rainbow flag to be a gift to Putin as a symbol of lack of love and freedom.
