Former Slovak National Police Chief Milan Lucansky, who was detained in custody on corruption charges in early December, attempted suicide in his cell, refresher.sk reported on Saturday.

Referring to the Slovak news portal, MTI writes that Lucansky, who held the position from June 2018 to August 2020, tried to hang himself in his private cell in Prešov. The 51-year-old police general is currently being treated at a hospital in Rózsahegy. This information was also confirmed to three by refresher.sk. Previous reports only referred to the former police chief having to be taken to hospital, according to unofficial reports, due to a serious head injury.

According to the Slovak press, Lucansky is suspected of taking a bribe of 510 thousand euros (180 million guilders). The former police chief was arrested as part of a police operation under the pseudonym Judas.

In addition to Lucansky, Boris Bena, deputy director of the Slovak Information Service (SIS) and five high and current senior officials of the security services, including Peter Gasparovic, former head of intelligence espionage, were taken into custody. In recent weeks, the Slovak National Law Enforcement Agency has carried out several serious arrests, mainly against current and former intelligence officers and senior police, as well as against some influential economic actors.

Proceedings were initiated against him mainly for corruption, money laundering, abuse of power and support for criminal activity.

The first arrest was in early November and several similar actions have been carried out since then. Among those arrested are, among others, two former heads of the national police and co-owner of one of the largest Slovak financial groups, Penta. According to the Russian news agency TASZSZ, most of the suspects resigned from the position of Slovakian investigative journalist and girlfriend Ján Kuciak, who sparked a major scandal and political storms nearly three years ago.
