Russian authorities have threatened opposition politician Alexei Navalny with a prison sentence that will be served if he does not return to Russia in time, Reuters reports. Navalny is due to return to Moscow on Tuesday morning, at the urging of the authorities.

If that doesn’t happen, the opposition politician could face a prison sentence to be discharged.

According to the Russian prison authorities, by leaving the country, Navalny violated the conditional prison sentence imposed on him in 2014.

According to the authority, after recovering from the poisoning, Navalny should have returned to the country in October. They allege that the politician has “failed to fulfill his obligations” and, therefore, can change his suspended prison sentence to serve it.

Navalny spokesperson Kira Yarmysh wrote on Twitter that Navalny would have no chance of returning to Moscow in time and would still receive follow-up treatments for the August poisoning.

He added that the prison authority is playing Kremlin sheet music.

The Kremlin has previously stated that Navalny can return to the country at any time, like all Russian citizens.
