According to the final ruling of the Brașov Court of Justice on Tuesday, it is not necessary to hoist the Romanian flag on the tower of the mayor’s office of Sepsiszentgyörgy in memory of the “liberation of the city from Hungarian occupation,” MTI reported.
The content of the verdict was published on the portal of the Romanian courts. The panel court dismissed an appeal by the Civic Association for Dignity in Europe (ADEC), which sued for the exclusivity of the Romanian language and symbols, against a similar first instance verdict.
Last year, the plaintiff requested in an open letter to the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the Covasna County Prefect, the war veterans’ organizations and the Romanian associations in Szeklerland to join the lawsuit “due to the importance of the case “, but remained only in the plaintiff’s claim.
The association’s president, Dan Tanasa, who became known for his extreme anti-Hungarian sentiment, expressed his outrage. He commented on the court’s verdict in a blog post: “Judges from the Defense Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Covasna County Court and the Brașov Court of Justice have idly watched as a DAHR mayor strips away the history and dignity of Romanians “.
Dan Tanasa also recalled that the flag was hoisted on the tower in the presence of Defense Minister Nicolae Spiroiu on September 8, 1994, on the “50th anniversary of the liberation of Sepsiszentgyörgy” from foreign occupation, but was withdrawn by Mayor Árpád. Antal in 2015 during the renovation of the building.
Árpád Antal previously stated that according to the law, the flags of Romania and the European Union must be hoisted on the facades of public offices, and both flags will be flown on the facades of the Sepsiszentgyörgy town hall. However, he added that he hopes the law will be amended by the Romanian parliament to provide space for the city’s flag and the Hungarian community flag in addition to these flags.
In Sepsiszentgyörgy, with a population of almost 56,000, 77 percent of the population declared themselves Hungarian, according to the 2011 census, and the Romanian flag erected on the tower of the mayor’s office has been a source of tension for years.
They can be released from bribery at the earliest after ten days.
