Divers found the wreckage of an Indonesian airliner in the Java Sea that crashed the day before on Sunday, MTI writes, according to local authorities. There were 62 on the plane.
Hadi Tjahjanto, commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, said divers found some parts of the aircraft, life jackets and discovered the aircraft’s registration number at the crash site.
The area has good visibility, which helped to identify the machine. The army commanded warships and helicopters in the area. The Sriwijawa airline flight departed from Jakarta to Pontianak, Borneo. The plane disappeared from controllers’ radars shortly after launch. According to the Swedish Internet portal Flightradar24, which followed the flights, the plane suddenly lost its speed and flight altitude four minutes after departure. The flight was previously delayed for 30 minutes due to bad weather conditions in the area.
In two years, this was the second plane crash in Indonesia. In the country, 189 people were killed in October 2018 when a Boeing 737 MAX 8 passenger jet of the Indonesian airline Lion Air crashed from Jakarta to Bangka Island shortly after takeoff.
The US Department of Justice said Thursday that Boeing agreed to pay more than $ 2.5 billion to settle criminal charges related to the aircraft type after another similar type of passenger transport crashed in Ethiopia in 2019.
346 people died in the two accidents. Both cases occurred shortly after takeoff, and investigations revealed that MAX’s newly developed crash protection system detected that the aircraft had crashed due to technical failure and design flaws, thus pushing the nose down. From this situation, the pilots could no longer get out of the plane and they crashed. Subsequent investigations also revealed that Boeing had concealed the existence of this system from the authorities and pilots due to negligent planning and improper licensing.
The Sriwijaya Air flight was not a MAX model but an older Boeing 737-500.
