The Kiev Foreign Ministry accused Budapest of directly interfering in the electoral process in a statement issued Sunday night, with the prospect of a “tough reaction”. The Ministry responded to the fact that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó encouraged the Hungarians of Transcarpathia to vote in favor of the candidates of the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ) and Zoltán Babják, Mayor of Beregszász.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said they were not only disappointed by the Hungarian head of ministry’s remarks, but believed this would undermine the Hungarian-Ukraine talks. “In doing so, Budapest reaffirmed its direct intervention in the internal affairs of Ukraine and dealt an insidious blow to Kiev’s constant efforts to find a constructive solution to the problems in relations between Ukraine and Hungary,” the ministry stressed, making unacceptable the declarations of the Hungarian side and reaction ”.

We note that Budapest has ignored repeated calls from Kiev to stop ignoring the principles of the rule of law and good neighborly relations and to respect the laws of our country … its option is to react harshly to such measures in accordance with practice established international and Ukrainian legislation. Hungary’s overheating of emotions and provocation of Ukrainian citizens not to abide by the Constitution and laws of Ukraine are doomed to failure.

– affirms in the communication.

On October 20, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry warned Hungarian officials to refrain from political turmoil and interference in Ukraine’s municipal elections during their visits to Transcarpathia.
