We are very close to reaching a good agreement for the unity of the European Union, today we fight not only for the victory of the union, but also for the victory of common sense, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in Brussels this Thursday before the two-day meeting of EU leaders.
The prime minister stressed that important talks are expected at the EU summit in Brussels from Thursday.
Today we fight for the unity of our common continent. More importantly, we are fighting not only for the victory of the European Union, but also for the victory of common sense, because it is clear that our nations and many millions of people need it because of the epidemic and its economic consequences. We need to act sensibly and find a way to trustworthy solutions and a common sense victory.
– said Viktor Orbán.
He said the preparations took a long time and weeks, but that it was only “a few inches” to reach an agreement.
He stressed the need to ensure that health services related to the coronavirus epidemic can be fully provided to those in need, and that countries that really need this help receive financial support. “We have high hopes for today,” the prime minister said.
The leaders of the EU member states in their two-day meeting, among other things
- on the Union’s seven-year framework budget,
- on the coronavirus recovery fund and the rule of law mechanism that will be linked to it,
- and greater coordination on the epidemic,
- on climate change,
- they discuss security and external relations.
Fateful?
Diplomats in Brussels also consider some sort of agreement possible by the end of the EU summit that starts today, but not all consider it fateful that Hungary and Poland have already reached a preliminary and informal agreement with the incoming German presidency of the EU on Wednesday.
